Many Hokie fans have no idea what kind of a game and style their basketball team will be playing this winter, and the many years after that. Last year's team, that made the Sweet Sixteen, was not a good three point shooting team, but a great one. Several players shot over 40% from distance. But with new coach Mike Young, how will he run the offense and create shots.
On average, With Young as their coach, Wofford shot 37% from deep, with an average national three point percentage rank of 95. For reference, Tech shot 40% on their three pointers and that ranked them in at 8 nationally in three point percentage. Young's teams averaged taking 652 shots from beyond the ark per year and made an average of 243 three point shots during his tenure at Wofford.
Over Young's last four years at Wofford, the Terriers shot over 40% from three every year. During those four years, Young was fortunate enough to have arguably the best three point shooter in college basketball history, Fletcher Magee. Over the course of Magee's four year college career, he knocked down 509 threes.
At Virginia Tech, Young needs to find a Fletcher Magee type player. With great three point shooters on his team, Wofford's record increased to the point where they were 30-5 this past season. The NCAA has extended the three point line to a little over 22 feet this season. When the NCAA previously extended the three point line, three point percentages dropped across the country, while Young's team stayed the same. This proves that he is able to maintain a good shooting team, despite harsher shooting conditions.
